Uncertainty about new potential daycare, 20-unit apartment complex could be built in 2026

Construction of a daycare facility with 90 childcare spaces and a 20-unit apartment building, both announced in 2024, doesn’t appear to be starting this year.

According to La Ronge chief administrative officer Lyle Hannan, the developer of the daycare has not followed through with the acquisition of any parcel of town land at this time but may still be exploring site options in the region.

In 2024, the Town of La Ronge decided to support a new daycare facility in the way of offering land below market value, covering costs for sewer and water connections, as well as a five-year municipal tax abatement. The new facility, which could be built at 910 Boardman Street, is a project initiated by Zak’s Building Group (ZBG) out of Hague.

The single-storey development would be 7,000 square feet, be operated under a non-profit organization based in Saskatoon, and be open to residents of the region.

As for the 20-unit apartment building, which is also a project led by Zak’s Building Group, construction is still expected to proceed at 132 Hastings Street as the company has acquired the land. Hannan explained they are still in the planning phase and administration expects them to begin building the apartments in 2026.

Meanwhile, the town has proceeded with preparing and clearing land along Studer Street for seven residential lots. The preparation will also include the lot originally requested for the potential daycare development.

“Previously, these lots were not developed due to drainage issues in the area, so the town is addressing those issues,” Hannan wrote in an email to larongeNOW.

“The development of these residential lots is considerably cheaper versus brand new lots in Robertson Drive because the lands are already serviced with utilities and roads. The town will be marketing those lands soon, but interested persons may enquire to Jeff Long through the town office.”
