For the third week in a row, a major provincial golf championship is underway in Saskatchewan.

This week, over 130 players descended on the Chinook Golf Course in Swift Current for the Senior Championships, the first time since 2005 that the tournament has been held there.

A pair of local golfers have entered the tournament as defending champions and are in the hunt following Tuesday’s first round.

Prince Albert’s Pauline McDougall won last year’s senior women’s championship in Nipawin, while Spiritwood’s Todd Turgeon won his second of back-to-back men’s mid-masters last year, also at the Evergreen Golf Course.

As of this morning, McDougall was in fourth place, while Sturgeon began the day tied for fifth.

Colin Coben of Delisle is the senior men’s defending champion. He was t-16 after round one.

The championships will be played over three days and three rounds, with the event scheduled to end on Thursday afternoon.

Other golfers include P.A.’s Andrea Ring (seventh in the senior women’s 60+ division and 10th overall in the senior women’s 50+ division), Martin Ring (third in the senior men’s 55+ division), Darren Jenkins (t-25 in the senior men’s 55+ division), Cliff Selander (t-32 in the senior men’s 55+ division and t-17 in the men’s 40+ division), and Trent Kachur (t-40 in the senior men’s 55+ division).

Also, Meadow Lake’s Brent Dubray (t-54 in the senior men’s 55+ division and t-19 in the men’s 40+ division) and Tom Harrison (t-60 in the senior men’s 55+ division, 21st in the men’s super senior 65+ division, and 6th in the senior men’s 55+ white tees division), Melfort’s Kendell Arndt (t-68 in the senior men’s 55+ division), and Humboldt’s Frank Terryberry (79th in the senior men’s 55+ division and 29th in the men’s super senior 65+ division). Another Meadow Lake competitor is Neil Curtis (third in the senior men’s legends 75+ division).
