Programming keeping local children busy during summer break

There’s no shortage of activities for children in the tri-communities this summer as staff with local programs have plans in place to keep them busy.

The Village of Air Ronge has funded an eight-week program occurring Monday to Friday at the Elks Hall. It is being led by University of Saskatchewan student Kendon Skalicky and Churchill Community High School student Anna Robin.

It began July 2 and ends Aug. 22 with younger children in the morning and older ones in the afternoon.

“It’s fun. The kids are definitely in good hands in these programs across the town,” Skalicky explained. “It’s a great way for kids to find a recreation place outside of just themselves. They can come here and find a group of friends that maybe they have met, maybe they haven’t. I think it is just a great way for kids to put themselves in a good experience and good environment.”

The Air Ronge Summer Program has been following a schedule of themed weeks. Those weeks include science, holidays, arts and crafts, around the world, Disney, and the Olympics.

“This past week was our holiday week, so we had days like Easter, Christmas, Halloween, a bunch of those kinds of days,” Skalicky noted.

“It kind of feels nice for them to come in and have their own Christmas again. We got little stuffies for them and put them in presents and had a fun little Christmas Day.”

In La Ronge, the Alex Robertson Public Library is hosting activities four days per week. Mondays are called S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Summer, Wednesdays are the TD Summer Reading Club, Thursdays are Art History, and Fridays are for Junior Librarian for the Day.

“People loved Junior Librarian for the Day,” said Supervisor of Patron Services Emily Wong.

“That was the biggest surprise for me because this one is pretty involved. The kid comes in and they are basically working, but they have just been loving it, and the parents are thrilled with the results of it. They think it’s coming along really well. I’m happy that one has turned out as well as it has.”

The Alex Robertson Public Library will also be hosting a Pen and Ink Workshop on July 26 with artist Annalisa Heppner, as well as a Summer Art Camp Aug. 18 to 22 with author and illustrator Miriam Körner.

Those interested in the latter two events should contact the library to register.
