A competitive game, that involves tossing a beanbag into a small hole, is gaining popularity in Saskatchewan.

The fourth annual provincial cornhole championships were held this past weekend in Regina and across three tiers, had over 50 competitors. Saskatchewan Cornhole Association President Kevin Bittman believes the popularity of the game comes from the fact people of all ages and all walks of life can participate.

“It’s low risk, low impact and it’s a ton of fun,” Bittman explained. “You know you hit the board once and just think you should do it every time and when you don’t, you just keep trying and trying and trying,” he said.

Across four leagues in the province (Saskatoon, Regina, Weyburn and Moose Jaw), Bittman estimated they have about 1,500 people registered and between 50 and 100 people who play regularly. Going forward, he’s hoping to expand to Yorkton, Lloydminster and Prince Albert.

“Everybody plays it at the lake but now you can play it inside and there’s actually competitive leagues,” he said.

While provincials have run for the past four years, it was only second time the event was held at the Regina club’s new facility which offers enthusiasts a chance to play seven days a week.

“We had over 12,000 players come play through the club last year,” Bittman noted, adding it’s not uncommon to see three generations of players.

And while cornhole has not officially been recognized in Canada as a sport, Bittman confirmed representatives from both the national and provincial associations are working on the criteria for calling it a sport in Canada.
