Broncos hire Humboldt native as new play-by-play

The Humboldt Broncos will have a new but familiar radio voice for the upcoming season.

Hometown play-by-play guy, Blaine Weyland, will soon be calling the team’s games, both at home and on the road.

Weyland comes with plenty of experience, now finding his way back home for the team that’s always had a special place in his heart.

“This was always something that’s been in the back of my mind that I knew I wanted to do. You never know if it might happen one day, but it’s just weird how life works. Sometimes you think you’re further away from the actual dream, but it came a little bit closer to reality in the last couple of years as I got to fill in and wet the appetite a little bit. I’m beyond excited to be calling the Broncos games this year,” he told northeastNOW.

“This is my third stint here in Humboldt, and it means so much to me. It encompasses my whole life.. it’s a lifetime worth of memories here. If you knock down the wall behind the broadcast booth, you’d actually be looking directly at my house, which I grew up in. The rink is something I thought about every day, stepping inside the building that I grew up playing in, I got one banner in there that actually has my name on it, so it’s definitely going to be very special this year.”

Weyland had served as a colour commentator for two years with Yorkton and Melville, as well as with Swan Valley and Waywayseecappo of the MJHL. He then spent five seasons as the play-by-play voice of the Estevan Bruins and also worked as a beat reporter for the Saskatchewan Roughriders for two years.

He’s filled in as Humboldt’s announcer during the 2016–18 seasons and again in 2024–25.

“Some of the faces change, but some of them stay the same… it’s just those connections with the personnel with the Broncos over the years that makes it easier to reconnect with the team. The first couple of games will be a little bit of nervous excitement, obviously, it’s something I’ve done before, but it’s doing something I really love and enjoy, that’s even more special because it’s a place I’m synonymous with,” Weyland added.

“It’s always been exciting to come back and watch Bronco games, I remember coming back to a Humboldt, Melfort game a couple of years ago, and it just captivated me how there wasn’t much of a drop off in the competitiveness and speed between the SJHL and the WHL, so it’s always always good like to be with a franchise like the Broncos who are serious contenders and always near the top of the standings. I definitely think that this is going to be another good year for the team, and hopefully, they can push and break through the ceiling and possibly win a championship.”
