The Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Sage Roberts will be travelling to Newfoundland next month to compete in softball at the 2025 Canada Summer Games.

Roberts, who has never been to Newfoundland before, was selected to play on Team Saskatchewan after being scouted at a camp last September in Saskatoon.

“I’m pretty excited for it that’s for sure,” he said. “I think we should have a pretty good chance at getting a medal and I hope so.”

Roberts has been playing softball since he was 11 years old and he has experience playing in many provincial and national tournaments. In 2023, he played softball at the North American Indigenous Games in Halifax, and he returned home with a bronze medal.

Roberts believes Team Saskatchewan has a good shot at earning a medal at the upcoming Summer Games because the province tends to place well in softball. He is currently in Saskatoon competing in Softball Canada’s U20 2025 Canadian Championships.

The Canada Games brings together more than 2,000 able-bodied athletes and athletes with physical and intellectual disabilities for the largest amateur multi-sport event in the country. Alternating between winter and summer, they span over 30 different sports to showcase the very best in Canadian athleticism.

Softball has featured on every program since 1969, typically having men’s and women’s competitions, with the exception of 2009 and 2013 which were women’s only.
