Humboldt Broncos to hold new girls’ summer hockey school

Aug 1, 2025 | 1:28 PM

The Humboldt Broncos will be hosting their first-ever girls’ summer hockey school later this month.

The club has always hosted a summer hockey school, however, this will be the first year they will host an additional, girls-only portion.

“We used to do a female one when I was in Battlefords, and it always had a pretty good turnout. We were also able to get a couple of ladies, one who runs a power skating school, and the other who played on Team Canada last year, to really run it,” explained Broncos head coach Brayden Klimosko.

“It makes sense to add a little bit of a different flair for the females that are usually stuck with the guys for most of the year, especially in the early age category. Hopefully, it’s just a good opportunity for some gals to be able to participate in the camp with their friends, and hopefully, make some new friends along the way.”

The camp is available to girls born from 2015 to 2020, with 40 spots available. As of this week, however, there were only five spots left. The girls’ camp will be held on the same days as the boys’ camp, August 25-28, just later in the day.

Some Broncos players will be coming back as well to participate in the running of the camps.

“I’m sure our guys are excited to come back and help out, because it’s always cool. It’s pretty funny the different personalities you get from the males in the morning, and then the females in the afternoon. Not taking away from either side, they’re just totally different in the way that they carry themselves throughout the day. It makes it pretty entertaining to get through some of those days, so guys are excited to come back and help, and it’s always a good week to start off before a fall camp,” Klimosko added.

“To be honest, the girls listen better at the end of the day, they’re so attentive to detail. I think at times the males can take advantage, and they could really add that to their game a little bit. The detail-orientedness that the females have, anything that you tell the females to do, they’re going to do it to a tee. I think that it makes you a better coach, knowing that you better be teaching the right way, because they’re going to be following you as best they can.”

The camps will feature seven hours of on-ice training, as well as dryland training. The special guest coaches are CanPowerSkate Coach Chelsea Wytrykusz and Alida Korte (sister of Humboldt forward Jeter Korte).

“It’s awesome to have both of them there, because as much as it’s okay for me to be teaching them, females want to learn from other females. You see it more and more now, and there’s more getting into the male side of the game in the coaching aspects of it,” concluded Klimosko.

“I think it’s great for them to learn from female coaches who have had some great experiences in their lifetime of hockey, so I think we’re pretty fortunate to be able to have some female coaches coming out who are going to help these little girls.”
