Landing planes, motor vehicle collisions, and more spark busy weekend for fire department

Aug 3, 2025 | 6:00 PM

The long weekend has been just that for the Prince Albert Fire Department: long. Since the start of Friday, fire crews have been called out 12 times with the long weekend Monday still to go, including everything from minor cooking incidents encampment and structure fires, and even assisting with landing a plane.

The most unusual of the calls came at the 12:45 p.m. mark at the Prince Albert Municipal Airport on August 2 when they were called to stand-by for a twin engine plane upon landing. The plane had one of its engines shut down before landing, but it managed to land safely without incident, and no one was injured.

Also on August 2, around 4:45 p.m. the fire department was called to the intersection of Highway 2 North and Highway 55 to extinguish a garbage bag that was lit on fire, and had managed to spread into the grass. No damage occurred.

Later that night at 10:00 p.m., they were called out again to the 2900 block of 2nd Avenue West where fire alarms were ringing. A power outage caused air exchange units in two businesses to overheat, and as a result the two businesses filled with light smoke. The buildings were ventilated and no one was hurt.

Going back a day to Friday, August 1, firefighters were called out right away at 1:30 a.m. to 17th Street East where they had to extinguish smoke from a steel recycling bin outside.

Then at 3:15 a.m., they were called to the 1200 block of 28th Street East where flames were visible coming off the roof of a multi-unit residential complex. The fire was extinguished from outside before crews were able to enter and start extinguishing what was left of the fire inside. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the suite where the fire started sustained significant damage.

Continuing their busy Friday morning, crews were called out at 7:00 a.m. to extinguish an encampment fire on the north side of Highway 55.

Now into the morning work hours, the next call came at 9:30 a.m. after a single vehicle collision was reported at River Street and 1st Avenue West, but crews found no evidence of a collision when they arrived.

Another motor vehicle collision was reported at 3:00 p.m., but this one had two vehicles involved at the 800 block of 15th Street East. One driver was assessed by EMS, but both vehicles were in driving condition once the scene was reopened to the public.

Across the three day span, fire crews were called to two different false alarms due to cooking, a third false alarm that was set off by dust from sweeping, and a fourth false alarm that did not have a reason provided.
