18-year-old driver facing charges after 13-year-old passenger killed in Regina crash

An 18-year-old man is facing criminal charges after a crash that left a 13-year-old passenger dead last week in Regina.

According to the Regina Police Service, officers were called to the intersection of Sixth Avenue North and Smith Street at around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday.

“When they arrived, they found a vehicle that appeared to have collided with a power pole and then rolled,” the police force explained in a statement.

“A 13-year-old victim, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was declared deceased on scene.”

After an investigation by a police collision analysis and reconstruction team, 18-year-old Connor Douglas was charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, and having a blood-alcohol level exceeding 80 mg/100 ml within two hours of operating a conveyance.

Douglas made his first court appearance on Tuesday in Regina Provincial Court, police said.

The crash left debris strewn across the road, and the car was left lying on top of a broken piece of a power pole from across the street. A nearby fence also appeared to have been damaged in the crash.

“It’s terrible,” said Brian Bailey, who lives in the area and saw the aftermath of the crash.

“The force to take out a telephone pole like that is incredible,” he added. “Those telephone poles don’t move.”
