Team Saskatchewan is off to a strong and competitive start at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland, making their presence known across a wide slate of events during the opening days of the competition.

Sunday marked the first official day of action for Team Sask athletes, with participants hitting the court, field, pool, and more in a wide range of sports, including basketball, baseball, box lacrosse, tennis, softball, soccer, and swimming.

In Women’s Basketball, Saskatchewan came out firing, jumping to a 10-2 lead over host Newfoundland and Labrador and never looked back. The team closed out a dominant 77-53 win and will look to stay hot Monday in a matchup with Nunavut.

The Men’s Basketball team battled New Brunswick in a tight contest. Despite a strong third quarter surge, Team Sask came up short in a 71-65 loss. They’ll also face Nunavut on Monday, aiming for their first win.

Baseball saw a standout performance from pitcher Brandt Spencer of Meadow Lake, who led Saskatchewan to an 8-1 win over Alberta. The team put up three runs in the third inning and carried that momentum throughout the rest of the game to grab the win. A big matchup awaits Monday against a red-hot Quebec team that is coming off an 11-0 win.

In Women’s Box Lacrosse, Saskatchewan earned an 8-5 win over Prince Edward Island. They’re set for a busy Monday with back-to-back games against New Brunswick and Manitoba.

Team Sask Tennis had a strong opening as well, defeating Manitoba 5-1. They’ll face New Brunswick in a crucial Monday showdown.

In Women’s Softball, Saskatchewan fell just short in a tight 1-0 loss to Alberta. They’ll look to bounce back with two games Monday against Nova Scotia and BC.

Women’s Soccer wrapped up the day with a tough matchup against powerhouse Ontario, dropping a 2-0 decision. They’ll be back on the pitch Monday evening to take on B.C.

Swimming opened competition with several timed finals including the 1500m freestyle (women), 800m freestyle (men), para swimming events, and the 4x200m freestyle relay. Saskatchewan swimmers hit the water strong with several solid performances to build on through the week.

Off the competition floor, several Team Sask squads used Sunday to prepare for their events.

At Quidi Vidi Lake, the Canoe Kayak team completed its second day of training. The squad is a true family affair as coach Devri Robertson is leading her three children, Baer, Axa, and Sabe, while her husband, former Canoe Kayak Canada national team member David Robertson, is filling in as one of the competition’s officials.

Cycling (Road) athletes were out on Team Gushue Highway getting their legs ready for Monday afternoon’s time trial. The marquee event will be the Criterium in downtown St. John’s on Saturday, August 16.

Rugby Sevens athletes (both men and women) wrapped up their final practices ahead of their tournament openers against Manitoba. The men’s competition is especially noteworthy as it returns to the Canada Games schedule for the first time since 2009.

Beach Volleyball players also hit the sand in training Sunday. They open tournament play Monday, with the women facing New Brunswick and the men taking on Nova Scotia.

Finally, Sailing athletes spent Sunday in race prep mode ahead of Monday’s events at the Royal Newfoundland & Labrador Yacht Club.
