A tornado warning has been issued for a portion of northwestern Saskatchewan.

The warning was issued at 4:40 p.m. and says that Environment Canada is tracking a severe thunderstorm that has a strong chance of producing a tornado 10 km North of Primrose Lake, moving southeast at 30 km/h. Damaging winds, large hail and intense rainfall are also possible.

The warning includes the communities of Buffalo Narrows, Dillon, Cole Bay, Canoe Arrows and Keeley Lake.

Meteorologists advise to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches or if a roaring sound, funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, or flying debris is observed.

To protect against a tornado, go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if possible.

As a last resort, lie down in a low spot like a ditch, and protect your head from flying debris.

Tornado warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing tornadoes.

Weather updates can be found on the Environment Canada website.
