The Battlefords Agricultural Society kicked off this year’s Northwest Territorial Days last night with their annual parade. Yesterday’s parade had a large turnout, in both the amount of spectators and the number of floats.

Candy-catchers were lined up along the sidewalks to watch the over 100 floats parade along the route that went down from 104th Street to 100th Street along 19th Avenue and back up again along 13th Avenue.

The Indigenous communities surrounding the Battlefords had colourful floats depicting cultural symbols and imagery. Hilda Rose-Kadler, Interim President of the Battlefords Agricultural Society, said the parade’s Indigenous floats were a sign of the great relationship between the various cultures in and around the area.

“I think that just talks a great bit about our community and the kind of fellowship that we have within the community and how we’re actually making great strides to come together as a North Battleford, reaching out to its partners in the community.”

The parade was just the beginning of this year’s Northwest Territorial Days, which is shaping up to be one of the biggest yet. With a wide variety of events planned over the course of three 11-hour days, there will be no shortage of things to do at the exhibition.

This year’s lineup of events includes chariots, chuckwagons, rides, street performers, fireworks and a light horse show. Chariots begin at 3 p.m. today and Thursday and at 2 p.m. on Friday, with chuckwagons beginning at 6 p.m. today and Thursday and 5 p.m. Friday.

There will be a large draw during NWT Days, with some big prizes for the three names drawn. The first prize is a three-piece backyard furniture set donated by Home Hardware, second prize is $1,500 and third prize is two flex tickets to any Battlefords North Stars game this season. Tickets for the draw are $10 a piece or $20 for three tickets.

Northwest Territorial Days runs from Aug. 13-15 from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. each day. Wristbands for rides are available at the gate for $55.
