Over the last few days, the Prince Albert Police Service has received multiple calls regarding fraud in the city where counterfeit bills have been used.

In many cases, an individual has entered a business and used counterfeit $50 and $100 notes to purchase products and receive real Canadian currency as their change.

The counterfeit bills looks similar to real banknotes, but there are some key differences that are noticeable if you take a moment to look at them.

  • the counterfeit notes appear slightly different in colour to the real ones
  • counterfeit notes DO NOT have raised edges like the real ones
  • it is possible for you to scratch off the ink from a counterfeit banknote
  • counterfeit banknotes may have the same serial number as other counterfeit banknotes

If you believe that you are being offered a counterfeit bill, police advise you first to assess the situation to make sure you aren’t at risk, and then take the following steps.

  • Politely refuse the note and explain that you suspect it may be counterfeit.
  • Ask for another note and make sure to inspect it as well.
  • Advise the person to check the note with police.
  • Call police and inform them of a possible attempt to pass suspected counterfeit money.
  • Be courteous and remember that the person in possession of the bill could be an innocent victim who is not aware the note is suspicious
