Raiders Run returns for second year

The Prince Albert Raiders will be swapping their skates for running shoes next month as part of the second annual Raiders Run event taking place Sunday, Sept. 7.

The event, organized in partnership with Saskatchewan-based 321 Go Running, raises money for the Raiders Education Fund while offering fans a chance to run alongside their favorite hockey heroes.

“Last year was a huge success,” said event director Jonathan Huntington. “We had almost 300 participants, which was wonderful for a first-year event. Raider hockey players were out there in their jerseys, running with kids and fans — it’s the only running event in the province where you can do that with a WHL team.”

This year’s run will once again start at 10 a.m. at the Art Hauser Centre, with routes along the Rotary Trail. Participants can choose from 2 km, 5 km, or 10 km distances, walking or running at their own pace. Families are encouraged to take part—strollers are welcome—and registration includes a long-sleeve black Raiders Run shirt. Youth can register for $30 plus tax and fees, while adult registration ranges from $59 to $65.

The Education Fund helps cover costs for current or former Raiders who are taking university classes.

“Every year you play in the Western Hockey League, you get post-secondary education paid for and any education costs they incur when they’re playing for us here as well,” explained Raiders business manager Mike Scissons. “Some of our players are taking university classes…so, the Education Fund is a collection we do in order to pay for that.”

Beyond the finish line, the Raiders’ community spirit will be on full display. Players will personally place medals around each finisher’s neck, followed by post-race snacks and mingling inside the Art Hauser Centre.

“Last year, you could see the excitement in the kids’ eyes. They’re used to seeing these players behind the glass on the ice. Out here, they’re running right beside them, talking, laughing—those interactions are memories they will have for years.”

Registration is now open at 321gorunning.ca or through the Raiders’ social media channels.
