Seven-year prison sentence in Yellow Quill First Nation manslaughter case

Aug 13, 2025 | 3:43 PM

A man originally charged with second-degree murder in a death on the Yellow Quill First Nation last summer has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Cole Smokeyday of Yellow Quill was sentenced at Melfort Court of King’s Bench for his role in the death of Terrance Tony-Kishayinew on Aug. 18, 2024.

The defence and Crown produced a joint manslaughter submission, which was accepted.

After credit for time served, Smokeyday received a sentence of just over seven years in prison for the manslaughter and a separate assault charge.

He also received a 10-year firearms prohibition and a primary DNA order, while the victim surcharge was waived.

The Crown stayed charges of assault and uttering threats in connection to the incident last August.

Smokeyday was charged after a report of an injured person at a home on Yellow Quill, and Tony-Kishayinew was declared dead at the scene.
