Marguerite Riel Centre hosting Family Culture Event at Candle Lake

A fun and unique event to highlight Indigenous culture.

The Marguerite Riel Centre is hosting Family Culture Camp Aug. 25 through 28.

The camp will be held at Camp Tawow at Candle Lake, and is open to anyone. Transportation, accomodation, and meals are also free of charge.

Children must be over the age of three, and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Activities at the four-day camp will include swimming, canoeing, fishing, games, crafts, and a movie night on the beach. There will also be prizes and draws, and adults

The Marguerite Riel Centre’s Perry Opoonechaw told northeastNOW there will also be cultural learning events. They will include wilderness survival teachings, learning more about medicines and making medicine bags.

“Then using those bags and harvesting some of those medicines that are located around Camp Tawow,” said Opoonechaw.

He said having a cultural component to the camp is important.

“A lot of the people we take to these things, they don’t usually get to go to some of these things,” Opoonechaw said. “A lot of our stuff is free, we don’t ask for anything, we just ask for participation.

Opoonechaw said they have a lot of fun activities planned for the camp and some great food as well.

“It’ll be a good time, everything’s looked after.”

A few spots are still open, but the Centre would like to close registration at the end of the day on Friday.
