Parents praise COPP child reunite service at fair
Northwest Territorial Days are in full swing at the Battlefords Agricultural Society grounds. With the excitement of all the rides, food booths and events going on, it can be very easy for a child to wander away from their guardians, but the Battlefords Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) is offering a service that makes it easier for lost kids to be found on the fairgrounds.
Battlefords COPP Chairperson Doug Fehr said the system they use for reuniting children with their guardians is simple, yet effective.
“The way it works is that we get the parents permission to put a wristband on the child’s arm that has the contact information for their adult supervisor – could be a parent, could be an auntie, could be a guardian, could be an older brother or sister.” Fehr explained. “We have the adult’s phone number on the bracelet and the kids are instructed to come to our tent if they’re lost.”
The volunteer service debuted last year at the Territorial Days Fair. Over the course of three days, more than 120 calls were made about lost children. Once again this year, parents and guardians think the service is extremely useful to have during a busy event.
