MacAngus steps down from city council; by-election to follow

Ross MacAngus tendered his resignation from North Battleford city council during Monday night’s meeting citing personal reasons, and his fellow council members voted to accept it.

MacAngus, who was elected to a second term in November of 2024, will remain in his role until Aug. 31. After that, his seat will remain vacant until a new councillor is elected and sworn in. According to a statement issued by the city, under the Local Government Election Act, a by-election must be held within six months. A proposed date is expected to be brought forward at the Sept. 8 council meeting.

MacAngus’ resignation comes amidst a personal legal situation unfolding in court. A sexual assault charge, laid last November following an alleged incident in September, was dismissed earlier this year. Instead, on June 25, MacAngus entered a guilty plea to a related assault charge. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 4, pending a joint submission from the Crown prosecutor and defence counsel.

Mayor Kelli Hawtin said she is thankful for MacAngus’ service. “You’ve not only had nearly five years serving as a councilor, but many years as a bylaw officer and community safety officer for the city. And we just want to really thank you for your time in public service, and wish you well after August 31.”
