Battlefords horseback ride for Terry Fox returns Sept. 14

This September, horse lovers in the Battlefords area will raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation by doing a trail ride for cancer research.

The ride will span about eight kilometres through pastures, bush, fields, sand roads and ditches.

Karen Ulmer, one of the organizers of the Terry Fox Ride, said the idea for the ride came 44 years ago when members of the Battlefords Quarter Horse Club decided to take their passion for riding horses and use it to help raise money for an important cause that affects many people and families across the country.

“We all know somebody that has cancer, we all know somebody who’s passed away from cancer or beaten cancer. And it’s just a great way to support an organization that continues to do great work all over the world,” she said.

While raising money for the Terry Fox Foundation through running (or riding horses) is a Canadian tradition, Ulmer said other countries have joined in on the movement to help bring an end to cancer.

The Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $900 million for cancer research so far during its 45-year span. The advances made in cancer research due to the large amount of money raised has proven to be lifesaving.

“Based on the information the foundation has given us, the Terry Fox Foundation’s research has contributed to an incredible decrease in the fatalities in childhood cancers, which is amazing.” Ulmer shared.

The Terry Fox Ride will take place on Sept. 14 at the Newman farm, approximately 8 kilometres southwest of Battleford. Direction signs will be posted. Registration will begin at noon, with the ride starting at 1 p.m. A barbecue will be held once the ride is completed at around 4 p.m.

Horse riders or anyone else interested in helping a great cause can show up to the ride with a cash, cheque or online donation to the Terry Fox Foundation. Online donations can be made to www.terryfox.org.
