Zoning change to allow new francophone school on Monday council agenda

Aug 22, 2025 | 1:42 PM

A zoning change to allow for a new Conseil des Écoles Francophones (CÉF) school in the West Hill is on city council’s Monday agenda.

First reading for a zoning amendment to change the land use from medium or high density to institutional will be in front of council.

The location is directly south of the Alfred Jenkin’s Field House and will also need 28th Street West to be extended to accommodate the new location.

The province first announced the new school in 2023, which will replace École Valois and will be designed to accommodate up to 350 Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 students, including 51 child care spaces.

Construction is anticipated to start next summer.

In addition to its proximity to the Alfred Jenkins, the new school will be very near the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan’s new offices and childcare centre.

That building, which is nearing completion, will serve as a community hub for Métis people in the region.

MN-S is also planning a subdivision of tiny homes to sell, probably as rent-to-owns, for their people next to the office.

Once council passes first reading on the zoning change for the new school, there must a public hearing and two more readings before the change takes effect.
