WARSAW — Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Europe as part of a broader effort to deepen ties with allies there.

Carney’s plane left Ottawa early Saturday headed to Poland for his fourth European trip since taking office in March.

In Poland, he is expected to hold bilateral talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk before heading to Germany for a meeting with Chancellor Friedrich Merz and a roundtable with German business leaders.

Carney’s schedule has him wrapping up the trip with a visit to Latvia, where nearly 2,000 Canadian Armed Forces troops are stationed as part a series of NATO battle groups intended to deter Russia from invading more countries in eastern Europe.

Carney has moved swiftly to align Canada closer to Europe as the relationship with the United States soured under President Donald Trump.

In Brussels in June, he signed a joint security and defence pact with the European Union that makes it easier for Canada to bid on and benefit from defence contracts in Europe and reduce its reliance on the U.S.
