The Government of Saskatchewan has received several environmental certifications and awards this year from the Saskatchewan Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) for their excellence in building performance and sustainability.

BOMA BEST (Building Environmental Standards) is Canada’s largest environmental assessment and certification for existing buildings.

Eleven government buildings received BOMA BEST certifications this year, eight of which were gold certifications. Those buildings were Wiciwakan Place in Meadow Lake, Eiling Kramer Building in North Battleford, McNevin Building in Nipawin, Saskatoon Equipment Repair Depot, the Regina Provincial Courthouse, Paul Dojack Youth Centre, Lloyd Place, and Government House.

Three Government Buildings received silver BOMA BEST certifications: the Melfort Court of Kings Bench, E.I. Wood Building in Swift Current and the Saskatchewan Polytechnic E.A. Davies Building in Saskatoon.

Along with BOMA BEST certifications, some buildings also underwent ENERGY STAR assessments. Four buildings received a certification based on their energy efficiency compared to similar buildings in Canada.

Wiciwakan Place received a score of 91, meaning it is more efficient than 91 per cent of similar buildings nationwide. E.I.Wood Building, Lloyd Place and Eiling Kramer building received scores of 81, 87 and 84 respectively.

Three buildings also earned BOMAEarth Awards for 2024, which are given to the buildings with the highest BOMA BEST score in each asset class. The Government House, Lloyd Place and Saskatoon Equipment Repair Depot received BOMAEarth awards for being the highest ranked universal building, office building, and light industrial building respectively.

A government employee was also recognized by BOMA. Elena Diebel received the Lloyd Rogers Member of the Year Award and has been nominated nationally for Member of the Year. The award recognized individuals who demonstrate leadership, initiative, or service to the leadership community.

The certifications are part of the Government of Saskatchewan’s work to improve sustainability and take action to fight climate change.
