It was a wild few days for Jeff Ede and Derek Wrightson, who attended Extreme Mudfest in Alberta and drove away with second place in their category.

Billed as Canada’s largest mud and music festival, the event was held Aug. 21 to 24 in Cold Lake. The two men entered into the mega truck division, which took place over three days with 17 vehicles racing.

“It’s kind of an obstacle course track. It takes about four minutes to complete,” Ede said.

“There was four races. One race on Friday, two races on Saturday and one final race on Sunday. Each competitor gets to go out and do their four laps and their best three laps are counted, and you get to eliminate your worst lap of the weekend.”

Ede and his co-driver Wrightson earned second place in the race with an average time of 11 minutes and 24 seconds. That was about 55 seconds behind the first-place winner Devon Villeneuve of Kelowna, B.C.

“There were really good drivers and really good vehicles out there,” Ede remarked.

“I have placed first in years previous, but [this was] the best showing lately for the last couple of years. It was the first one of this year, so we are really happy with the results of only doing one event this year.”

While Ede takes the spot in the driver’s seat, Wrightson communicates with Ede via radio and acts as his eyes outside of the buggy. Wrightson is also a member of the pit crew to keep the buggy running and assists with logistics.

“It’s a great event to go out to. It’s a lot of fun,” Ede said of Extreme Mudfest.

“All of the event organizers do such a great job. There’s a lot of hard work out there. It’s a good family event. Lots of activities are going on and concerts at night and all sorts of classes or racing from mud drags to high horsepower stuff. Some jumping obstacles for the other guys and all in all just a really fun weekend and lots to do out there.”
