Mintos management happy with compete level at fall camp

The hockey season has officially arrived for the Prince Albert Mintos hosting their annual fall camp.

Dennis Pott took over as the general manager for the Mintos in May, and with an overhaul to the team’s staff over the summer that saw the hiring of Head Coach Dion Antisin and Assistant Coaches Chase Freidt-Mohr, Bryan Glynn, and most recently Jeff Willoughby. Pott said it’s great to finally have everyone together in one place.

“It’s really exciting for us. We have a full coaching staff now. We brought in Dion, he’s moved into the city now, we’re getting ready to go, seeing the camp, seeing how all the staff is working together and gelling, it’s really, really exciting for us to see.”

This year’s camp was busier on the ice as they not only hosted players aged 15-18 that could potentially make the team, born in 2007-2010, but they brought in younger players born in 2011-12 as well to play in games against each other. Pott said that with such a new coaching and management staff, it was important for the Mintos to reach out to that younger age group and start establishing relationships with families early.

“That’s exactly how we looked at this summer. We ran summer skates so we could all work together all summer and get to know each other. So we had all the coaches come out with all these young players and this way now that the season is starting, we’ve already been together for two months. So we’re excited about that.”

From what Pott saw at camp this year, he’s excited for what this Mintos team is going to look like for 2025-26. He said that every skate and fitness testing session has been incredibly competitive over the course of the weekend, and soon it will be time to see how those pieces fit in as they build the roster.

“With the new coaching staff, they’re going to come up with their own depth chart, see where everybody’s going to land, where they’re going to play, what kind of role they’re going to do. So right now, we’re still in the evaluation part of the of this team building, but we’re excited about how we don’t seem to have any weak players. Everything looks like a very deep roster.”

Although there are some question marks left with some players like Connor Howe, Liam Myhre, and Madden Dell all heading to Raiders camp this year. Still, Pott hopes that they can lean on their returning players to find that edge it takes to compete with the top teams in the league like they did with the Regina Pat Canadians in the playoffs.

“The boys that are coming back realize how close they were to beating the top team in the country. They know they can play with them and it’s a great building block and they’re going to show the younger guys what it takes to play at that level,” Potts added. “We think we’re a hard working team. We think we’re going to battle every night and we think we’re going to be in some tight scoring games.”

The schedule for the 2025-26 season has not been released yet, but the season will start near the end of September.
