Community Safety Hub organized in Pelican Narrows

A group effort for Pelican Narrows.

A pilot Community Safety Hub has been established in the community.

The program was launched by Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) to “strengthen safety and wellness for families.”

A PBCN news release stated the Hub brings together many agencies, including frontline staff from health, Child and Family Services, education and justice. They, along with Elders, RCMP, Victims Services, and PBCN support programs will sit at a shared Hub Discussion Table that would “coordinate real-time supports for individuals and families facing complex challenges.”

The collaboration is seen as an improvement to working in isolation.

Hub coordinator Sarah Swan said it’s all about prevention and support.

“By working together, agencies can respond quickly to families in need while protecting privacy and ensuring solutions are holistic,” she stated.

The goal of the Hub is to prevent crises before they happen. Concerns are raised at the table without the use of names, and if members agree there is an elevated risk, then a case number will be assigned.

Agencies are designed to share information “in a safe and respectful way,” and a coordinated support plan is quickly established by a small team.

The Hub steering committee met in Prince Albert last Monday to finalize preparations, and the following day Hub members began planning for full implementation at a meeting in Pelican Narrows.

The release said the Hub will support families dealing with issues like addiction, housing, or mental health, along with at-risk children and youth and community members “caught in cycles of crisis.”

Staff, parents, or community members can make referrals.

The project, which is aligned with PBCN’s Community Safety Plan, is funded through a five-year grant from Public Safety Canada.
