PA/Melfort softball team dominates rest of province

The Lakeland District 8 softball team brought home gold this past weekend in dominating fashion.

A Prince Albert and Melfort combined team faced off against the other seven districts in the province over the two-day tournament, going undefeated throughout, with every game being a blowout.

“We went undefeated this weekend, and actually, we mercied every game as we did it. We had a super talented team, and they gelled really well, which was really nice to see. The hitting, pitching, and fielding were unbelievable, and it just goes to show what happens when you get to pull from our entire district,” said head coach Amy Fiddler.

“This was by far the strongest group I’ve ever seen. Melfort had a very talented group this year, and so did PA. The two teams were so competitive all year and really pushed each other to be great, so to be able to take some players from each team and combine them just made for a great weekend.”

The U13 Showcase came after provincials and westerns, but was used as a way to extend the season a little bit by Softball Saskatchewan.

The six Prince Albert Aces and five Melfort Spirit girls took full advantage of the ‘for fun event’, ending their 2025 summer with memorable win after memorable win, alongside former competitors.

“We kind of joked around that there was never any foe, just very strong competition, one that you always respect. A lot of these girls get to play together on travelling teams during the winter or from other school sports, so there were no issues in coming together,” Fiddler added.

“You kind of think that your season is done after provincials and/or westerns, so it was nice to just bring these girls together for a fun tournament. They all had the same purpose, though, and that was to bring home the gold. I also told them that with how strong a group we had that this was the year to do it, so it was nice to finish out the year, especially for the girls that are moving up next season, with a gold medal at the provincial showcase.”

To mercy an opponent, you must be up by at least six runs entering the final inning of a game. Lakeland District 8 was up by at least that many in every single contest.
