PBCN launches Community Safety Hub in Pelican Narrows

Aug 26, 2025 | 2:38 PM

A new Community Safety Hub in Pelican Narrows is aiming to strengthen safety and wellness for families.

The leadership of Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) announced this morning they have set up the new Hub as part of ongoing efforts to combat rising violence in the community due to drug and gang activity. Members met on Aug. 18 in Prince Albert to finalize preparations before heading to Pelican Narrows a day later to begin planning for full implementation.

The new initiative brings together a wide range of support, including frontline staff from health, Child and Family Services, education, justice and other agencies. It also includes Elders, RCMP, Victim Services and PBCN.

“The Hub is about prevention and support,” said Sarah Swan, the Hub’s coordinator. “By working together, agencies can respond quickly to families in need while protecting privacy and ensuring solutions are holistic.”

Designed to prevent crises before they happen, the Hub will support families dealing with issues such as addiction, housing or mental health, children and youth at risk, and community members caught in cycles of crisis.

“At the table, concerns are first raised without names,” continued the release about how the Hub will operate, adding that all discussions follow strict confidentiality rules. “If members agree there is elevated risk, a case number is assigned. Agencies then share information in a safe and respectful way, and a small team builds a quick, coordinated support plan.”

The project is funded by a five-year grant from Public Safety Canada and is aligned with PBCN’s Community Safety Plan.
