Hunter gets 379 days in custody for unlawful outfitting, other offences near Wilkie

A man from Red Pheasant Cree Nation has been handed a jail sentence and hunting suspension after pleading guilty to unlawful outfitting and other offences tied to a police chase last fall.

The Saskatchewan Conservation Officer Service said officers in North Battleford were investigating complaints of unlawful hunting near Wilkie on Oct. 11, 2024, when they attempted to stop a vehicle suspected of being involved.

They said the driver fled twice from conservation officers before RCMP were called in. Despite the use of tire deflation devices, the vehicle continued to flee until it was later tracked to a residence on Red Pheasant Cree Nation.

Following the investigation, Elliot Meechance was charged with several offences. In North Battleford provincial court on July 31, 2025, he pleaded guilty to driving while prohibited, failing to stop for a peace officer, and outfitting without a licence.

Meechance was sentenced to 379 days in custody, followed by two years probation, along with a one-year driving prohibition and three-year hunting suspension.

The province says an American hunter guided illegally by Meechance was also fined $1,400 for engaging in unlawful hunting.

The public is encouraged to report wildlife and environmental violations to Saskatchewan’s Turn In Poachers and Polluters line at 1-800-667-7561 or report online at saskatchewan.ca/tipp.
