It’s a busy week for Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski, who is currently hosting a hockey school at Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) while preparing for the team’s main camp this weekend in Aberdeen.

With 65 participants attending this week’s school, the four-day skills-building program is nearly sold out. The participants are split into two age groups, with those five to 11 in one and those 12 to 17 in another.

Sessions began Monday and end Thursday.

“The first day was a lot of power skating, learning our edge work, outside edge and inside edge, crossovers, pivots and mohawks,” Kaminski explained.

“We just progressed that, then we went in with pucks and started playing little three-on-three, four-on-four, and now today we are playing five-on-five. We got the teams ready, and there will be a full game tomorrow for the young group and then a full game after the young group for the big group, and then we will have a barbecue, give out awards, and that will be it for the week.”

Following the school, Kaminski will then travel to Aberdeen for the main camp set for Aug. 29 to Sept. 1. There, over 70 players are expected to partake.

“There are four teams, so we will play a round robin,” Kaminski remarked.

“Sunday, we have a young guns game against Warman, so we will play a lot of our draft picks and some younger kids that will be there and give them a good look and probably send them back to their AAA teams. We will play a game against Warman on Monday, then we will make some cuts and come back here to La Ronge with about 35.”

There are about 10 returning players this season, with an additional two depending on whether they stay in the province to play or not. Kaminski noted that it is a good number, but added that the team has a lot of building to do.

“Recruiting-wise through the summer has been awesome,” he said.

“I feel like we have some great speed and great skill, guys who can play heavy. I think we have a good mixture of good chemistry.”

The Ice Wolves start the season with traditional back-to-back games against the Bombers starting Sept. 19 in Flin Flon. The Bombers will then travel to La Ronge on Sept. 20 for the Ice Wolves’ home opener at the JRMCC.
