If you’re carrying $50 or $100 bills, you might want to take a closer look.

Police in Lloydminster and Maidstone are investigating after several businesses reported counterfeit cash being used in recent weeks.

Mounties said seven reports have come in since mid-August involving fake Canadian bills, mostly in higher denominations.

RCMP Sgt. Christopher Byford said counterfeit money is a concern and it “directly impacts businesses and the community as a whole.”

“We encourage vigilance and reporting to help us stop the circulation of these bills,” Byford said in a release issued Wednesday.

“Lloydminster RCMP is seeking public assistance in identifying a suspect(s) believed to be responsible for passing these bills. Anyone with information is asked to contact police,” said RCMP in a release issued Aug. 27, 2025. (submitted/Alberta RCMP)

Investigators are asking the public to help identify suspects. Businesses are also being reminded to carefully inspect $50 and $100 bills before accepting them. Also, they encourage people to use Bank of Canada resources to learn how to verify security features.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation should contact Lloydminster RCMP at 780-808-8400. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at www.p3tips.com.
