Melfort street improvement projects to wrap up mid-October

Aug 29, 2025 | 3:00 PM

The City is providing an update on roadworks in Melfort this summer.

Director of Works and Utilities Kalyna Cipywnyk told northeastNOW the 2025 Street Network Improvement Project includes several streets across the city.

That includes:

  • Pavement, sidewalk and curb on 100 Block of McKendry Ave E and in front of Reynolds Central School,
  • Installing sidewalk on the north side of the 200 Block of Hatton Ave E, funded in part by the SGI Traffic Safety Fund grant program,
  • Pavement on 100 Blks of Babington Ave E&W (Local Improvement Program),
  • Patching on the 100 & 200 Blks of Osborne St following the 2024 watermain renewal project

“Also, as a part of the City’s operational Roadway and Sidewalk program, the city completed multiple asphalt patches across the roadway network in areas where the road had been excavated for water and sewer repairs, or over major potholes,” Cipywnyk explained.

Rubber crack sealing work on Shadd Dr. and Stovel Ave. W. was also commissioned, and they also assisted the Rotary Club in paving walking paths in Rotary Park.

Cipywnyk said the project on Hatton Ave. E. is scheduled to begin the first week of September.

“The exact phasing and schedule for the other project areas will be established as work progresses – the target completion date for the overall project is mid-October,” Cipywnyk said.

The operational projects have been completed.

Cipywnyk said these types of projects are important for the City to undertake annually to ensure road safety standards and expectations are maintained, along with the steady renewal of Melfort’s existing infrastructure. She noted there were some delays for the asphalt paving work at the beginning of August due to the wet weather. Cipynwyk added the City has engaged impacted residents and schools about the delays and has worked to establish a coordination plan for the work that will overlap with the beginning of the school year.

Meanwhile, Public Works crews will continue to address potholes and other street hazards for the next few weeks, using either hot or cold patch depending on what material is available at the time.

As far as the scope of the 2026 project, Cipywnyk said that it will be determined through the capital budget process starting this fall and will be presented to Council toward the end of 2025.

Cipywnyk thanks residents for their patience and cooperation as the City continues the improvement projects.
