From scavenger hunts to music: Meadow Lake to celebrate new Co-op Centre with ‘Welcome Week’

The new Co-op Centre in Meadow Lake won’t just be showing off shiny floors and fresh paint next week — it will be buzzing with scavenger hunts, music, pickleball and local talent.

The city is hosting its first Welcome Week from Sept. 8 to 13 — a grand opening celebration for the multi-million dollar facility and a chance for residents to see what it offers.

While the facility had an official opening back in June, Regan Beck, the city’s recreation manager, explained that was more of “an opportunity to open it up and acknowledge all the dignitaries that really went a long way to making this possible.”

“But we also want to have a celebration for the community and the surrounding area,” he said.

The lineup includes:

Monday: a scavenger hunt from 6 to 8 p.m. for everyone.

“We want them to get the chance to explore the facility, and what better way than having a scavenger hunt in the facility,” Beck said.

Tuesday: Community Registration Night from 4 to 7 p.m., where clubs and groups sign up members for fall activities.

“Bring a whole bunch of user groups, a whole bunch of people into our facility, get them a chance to see and have the opportunity to sign up for their kids or themselves.”

Wednesday: Youth Takeover Night from 7 to 9 p.m. in the fieldhouse with games, music, and a chill zone.

“This is the night for the kids. We’re going to show the kids all the things that this exciting building is for them.”

Thursday: a pop-up art gallery in Legacy Hall from 6 to 8 p.m. Beck said he hopes 15 to 20 artists will take part.

“We know there are a lot of creative, artistic people in the area,” he said. “It’s the one area in the recreation department we’re trying to improve the focus on and bring back some more of these opportunities for these local artists and let it be seen by a bunch of different people.”

Friday: BYO (Bring Your Own) Pickleball Night in the fieldhouse from 7 to 9 p.m.

“Pickleball is very big in the community right now,” Beck said. “Lots of people are very excited about it, and this is an opportunity for us to showcase that.”

Saturday: an open-mic talent showcase from 7 to 9 p.m. in Legacy Hall.

“The musical arts is another place that the North is known for,” Beck said. “Lots of variety of people during that evening, so really, really looking forward to that one.”

And the fun doesn’t end there — an outdoor drive-in movie is scheduled for Sept. 20 on the north side of the centre.

“[The movie] will be something for the kids more, so we get as many people as possible and open up to as many different groups.”

Beck said city staff across departments weighed in on how to celebrate.

“We kind of came up with this idea that we wanted the opportunity to have a whole variety of groups come on out and give them such a chance to showcase themselves as well as showcase our facility.”
