Former North Battleford councillor gets 24-month suspended sentence in assault case

After pleading guilty to assault, former city councillor Ross MacAngus was given a 24-month suspended sentence and probation Thursday in the North Battleford provincial court.

MacAngus admitted to grabbing a woman’s leg without her consent during an alcohol-fuelled incident at his home. RCMP originally received the report in September of 2024. He was charged last November with sexual assault, but prosecutors later accepted a plea to the lesser charge of common assault.

His lawyer Brian Pfefferle said the conditions include a no-contact order with the complainant, 200 hours of community service, counselling as directed, and a ban on alcohol. Court heard MacAngus was intoxicated to the point of blacking out at the time of the offence.

The complainant read a victim impact statement in court describing trauma and lost income as a result of the incident.

Pfefferle said MacAngus is relieved the case has concluded, but acknowledged the unwanted notoriety it brought in the community.

“He didn’t want to distract from the business of the city and the community,” Pfefferle said, noting MacAngus stepped down from council in August.

“He did so because he didn’t want to distract from the work of the community, one that he’s been a part of since birth and one that he has dedicated a lot of time to improving, and he didn’t want to detract from it in any way.”

He was first elected to council in 2020 and got re-elected in 2024. Now, a by-election is expected to be held within the next six months to fill the vacant seat. City administration has recommended setting the date in January 2026, with council scheduled to make a decision at its Sept. 8 meeting.

MacAngus declined battlefordsNOW’s request for comment.
