A suspect and another person are dead after a mass stabbing on Hollow Water First Nation in Manitoba.

RCMP said at least six people are in hospital after the Thursday morning attack which they described as a senseless act of violence. They said there was no longer a risk to public safety.

Police are expected to hold a press conference in Winnipeg later this afternoon.

The attack comes three years to the day after a mass stabbing on the James Smith Cree Nation (JSCN) and in Weldon, Saskatchewan, which left 11 people dead and 17 injured.

Members of JSCN that paNOW spoke to said the third anniversary is being marked quietly.

Chief Kirby Constant’s social media showed sweat lodge ceremonies, powwow feast and gathering, a memorial walk, and candlelit vigil were scheduled for the day.

In a post on their Facebook pages, Peter Chapman Band and Chakastaypasin Band, which are members of JSCN, said they are honouring those they lost on Sept. 4, 2022 but they also extend condolences to Hallow Water First Nation.

“For anyone struggling with the weight of the day, please know you are not alone. Reaching out to someone you trust can make the path a little lighter.

More to come…
