BY-ELECTION

North Battleford by-election recommended for January 2026

Sep 4, 2025 | 4:45 PM

City council will decide next Monday when to hold a by-election to fill a council seat left vacant on Aug. 31 following the resignation of Ross MacAngus.

City administration is recommending Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026. A report says the city looked at running the vote before Christmas, but there isn’t enough time to meet all the legal requirements and organize the election.

“There is not enough time to plan, organize and execute an election given the culmination of statutory requirements and volume of work required,” it noted.

The proposed nomination period would open Dec. 2 and close Dec. 17 at 4 p.m., giving candidates time to file papers before the holidays and still campaign or travel over the Christmas season.

Under provincial law, the by-election must be held within six months of the vacancy. Notably, an elections must occur on a Wednesday that is not a holiday.

Council will vote on the date at its Sept. 8 meeting.
