Council in Melfort wants to hear from you.

Coffee with Council is being held at the Kerry Vickar Centre Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m., allowing residents to ask questions and learn more about the City’s direction.

“Just an informal night where you can come visit with us for an hour,” Councillor Tara Muntain explained to northeastNOW.

The come-and-go event is an opportunity for residents to speak to members of Council and administration. Muntain said people can come and air concerns or ask about things they may not know about life in Melfort. She added if Council or administration are not sure of an answer to your question, they will do their best to find out and get back to you.

The important aspect of the get-together is that it is completely informal, with no speeches or podiums.

“It’s just roundtable, or just walk around and chat with each other,” Muntain said. “We just network, it’s a way to socialize to see what’s coming up in our plans.”

Muntain said they can also discuss the city’s five-year plan and what it means for Melfort.

The first meeting in May wasn’t well attended, but Muntain maintained that the number of attendees isn’t their main concern with the event.

“The people that showed up last time that had questions or issues, we were able to help them, and we were able to understand more in detail of what they were looking for, or what they needed help with.”

Muntain also recognized it’s a difficult time to plan an event like this, with the onset of harvest and the school year just getting into full swing. However, Council and administration wanted to make themselves available for residents.

The goal of Coffee with Council is also to be as transparent as possible, according to Muntain. She said people are sometimes unsure of the best way to access information or the proper channels for getting an issue dealt with. That could be something as easy as helping them navigate the City’s website or a contact person who specializes in a certain aspect that needs addressing.

The event is also a way for Council to be able to address any rumours or misinformation that may be making the rounds in ‘coffee row’.

“Coffee row is a great way to get information, and Coffee with Council is a great way to verify this information.”
