The Prince Albert Police Service has won bragging rights over the Prince Albert Fire Department and Parkland Ambulance for the year after winning the 45th annual First Responders Relay on Saturday afternoon.

The event was held at the Harry Jerome Track in Prime Ministers Park, and leads into the annual Terry Fox Run next weekend, an annual non-competitive charity event held around the world to raise money for cancer research.

Sgt. Brennan MacDonald with the city police said it felt good to get back on top.

“Last year we weren’t able to get it, and we’re happy we were able to this year. It was nice to get the trophy back. We got some bragging rights against the paramedics and the firemen, too.”

Prior to the start of the race, each of the three emergency services made a $500 donation to the Terry Fox Foundation, totalling $1,500. The Dutchak family also made a significant donation to the Foundation, although no total was given.

Last year’s race was held at Prince Albert Collegiate Institute (PACI) due to the renovations and upgrades of Harry Jerome Track and Max Clunie Field, where the paramedics took the win.

MacDonald credited some of the force’s new recruits who helped them recapture the relay crown.

“We got some young guys here that we’re chomping at the bit to get the trophy back. [Three of the] guys just got back from police college, so they’re pretty in top shape. The guys had a game plan, and they executed it perfectly.”

Since Terry’s Marathon of Hope in 1980, more than $900 million has been raised for cancer research through the Terry Fox Foundation, funding over 1,300 innovative cancer research projects.

“Everybody’s been touched by cancer in one way or another, so it’s important to come out and show our support,” commented MacDonald on behalf of the police service.

The annual Terry Fox Run is scheduled for next weekend on Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse. Registration opens at 12 p.m., while the run is set to begin at 1 p.m. More information about the event in Prince Albert can be found by clicking here.
