WATCH: Family takes home cherry-red Mustang after 10-year-old picks winning key in Summer Free Ride

“I felt like luck was on my side today and I just pulled the right key.”

That’s ten-year-old Ethan Cassidy after he and his family won the cherry-red 2007 Ford Mustang GT at 93.3 Beach Radio’s 5th annual Summer Free Ride finale Saturday at Blend Riverside in North Battleford.

The giveaway capped a summer-long promotion that took the Mustang to businesses and events across the region. More than 70 finalists gathered, each hoping their name would be called for a chance to pick a key — and if it unlocked the prize box, they’d win.

For the Cassidys, the moment was three years in the making. Nathan Cassidy said they entered the last giveaway but never got the chance to pull a key.

His son, though, never let go of the idea.

“He felt like if he would’ve been able to pull a key, he would’ve got lucky and grabbed the right one. But we didn’t get the chance,” Nathan said.

“And so for the last three years… he’s been waiting patiently to try again. So, he said if he got a chance today to pull a key, he’d get it, and luck was on his side today.”

The win still feels unreal, Nathan added.

“It’s pretty amazing. We’re pretty grateful… it’s hard to believe,” he said. “Selling it obviously would help, but he’s 10 and in six years it would be a pretty cool car to have.”

Ethan’s younger brother Oliver, who is six, explained he also tried to add some luck of his own.

“I threw a coin in the pond,” he said, adding he kept a hand on his brother’s shoulder for good luck before the draw.

Their mom, Michelle Cassidy, said the whole family sensed something special that morning.

“They woke up this morning and they were feeling really lucky today and luck paid off,” she said. “I just feel blown away. This is incredible.”

As much as the 10-year-old wants to get behind the wheel and take the beast for a rip, he’ll have to be patient.

“I’m gonna keep it in six years!” Ethan said.

For 93.3 Beach Radio host Nic Fransoo, the giveaway is always memorable, but this year stood out.

“To be honest with you, I’m gonna miss this car,” Fransoo said. “Our 2007 Mustang GT is probably one of the most beautiful cars we’ve ever done.”

“Every year the winners are excited, but the nice charm with Nathan bringing his son up there to pull the key just for good luck and then he won… I couldn’t believe it. It was amazing. It feels so good to watch that whole scene play out.”
