An annual tradition makes its return to Melfort this weekend.

The 14th annual Melfort Multi-K is taking place throughout the city on Saturday, Sept. 13.

Race Director Allison Rogers told northeastNOW the Multi-K was a sell-out this year, with well over 500 participants taking part.

“That’s pretty close to a record for us, especially being sold out that soon,” Rogers said. “It’s pretty exciting.”

Rogers said the whole purpose of establishing the Melfort Multi-K was to promote health and fitness in the community, regardless of age or physical limitations.

“Some people take it really seriously, but a lot of people are out there just to be active and be with family and friends,” explained Rogers.

There are a variety of different lengths of races in the Multi-K. The 1K Kids Fun Run is open for youth to dip their toes in the world of running. There are also 5K, 10K, and 21.1K races being held on Saturday. This year, the 21.1K race will start first at 8:30 a.m., followed by the opening ceremonies, then the 1K Kids Fun Run and the other races afterward.

Rogers said the course for all race lengths are posted on their website, and that allows spectators to line the course to cheer on the runners.

“Anyone’s welcome to come to the start/finish line and cheer people on,” Rogers said. The runners “love to see things on front lawns that are sort of words of encouragement, so feel free to decorate your lawn and help the runners out.”

Rogers said the race has always had great support as far as participants, and community support through sponsors, many of whom have been with the Multi-K through its beginning.

“Nobody thought that 15 years later we’re still going strong, so it’s pretty awesome.”

The Multi-K would be celebrating its 15-year anniversary if it weren’t for the cancellation in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Melfort residents are reminded that there will be no parking signage put up by the City on Friday along the route, and Rogers asks that people obey the signs for the safety of the runners.
