Raiders cheer on fans during Second Annual Raiders Run

Four games of the preseason are in the books for the Prince Albert Raiders, but the script was flipped on Sunday where the Raiders got to cheer on their fans instead at the Second Annual Raiders Run. With 2 km, 5 km, and 10 km options for people to walk and run, the event serves as another one of the fundraisers for the team’s education fund to help kick off the season.

This year’s runner count was nearly the same as last year’s according to Business Manager Mike Scissons, but the fundraiser was still a major success.

“It was a great event. Over 200 people came out and took part in either the 2 km, 5 km, or 10 km walk/run, and it was a beautiful day to have out there. We can’t thank the people who came out and participated enough as well as the volunteers who took points, and our sponsors who made it a reality and made it such a tremendous event.”

With the preseason ongoing, there are still plenty of players here before the roster is cut down to its final look. There are still tons of prospects present in town, and Scissons said that getting them out and about into the community is an important focus for the team.

“It’s important that they learn early, too. I mean, if it’s the first time to Prince Albert or if they’re returning player, it’s important to understand that these events that we go to in the community and around the community are in support of the people who support us. We’re very thankful and lucky every night to have the community come out and support us in the rink when we’re playing games. If we can go out, if it’s at a Raider Run, if it’s at the golf tournament, or if we’re invited to a school to do some reading or any sort of thing, we like to go out and give back to the community and help out wherever we can.”

Before the puck drops for the upcoming game on Thursday when the Raiders will head to Yorkton, the Raiders have another community event coming up with their second annual slo-pitch game to give fans another chance to meet the team that will play in front of them all year. If last year is any indication, Scissons said this event is a great one to get to know the personalities of the team.

“We got them some jerseys and they’ll split up and play a game of slo-pitch for everybody and you get to see the athleticism of these players on display. I remember last year we had a few guys that consistently put the ball out of the park on seemingly very easy swings. It can be frustrating from a guy like me who has a battle with athleticism at the best of times in life, and these guys are just tremendous, but they get to be kids again too. They get to go out there, throw and hit a ball, run the bases, and it’s great to see. So it’ll be a fun event for everyone to attend on Wednesday at 7 p.m.”

The Raiders also have two more games to finish the preseason, first on Thursday in a neutral site game in Yorkton against the Regina Pats, and a rematch on Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre.
