Rush Lake well failure probe expected to wrap up within three months

Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Energy and Resources says the investigation into the uncontrolled well release at Cenovus Energy’s Rush Lake II facility near Lloydminster is expected to be completed within three months.

The release first occurred in May, when gas and fluids surfaced at the Rush Lake II site, forcing Cenovus to shut down operations and triggering air quality monitoring in the surrounding area.

Residents reported strong odours and some experienced headaches and dizziness before the vapour cloud dissipated in mid-July.

In an update Monday, Sept. 8, the ministry said a preliminary review points to a well casing failure as the cause of gas and fluid escaping to the surface.

Operations at the site remain shut down while Cenovus prepares an investigation plan that must be approved by the province.

The ministry said a third party will participate in the investigation, and Cenovus must submit a full root-cause report once the inquiry is complete.

“Investigation work, barring operational issues, is expected to be completed within approximately three months,” it stated.

“As the provincial oil and gas regulator, the Ministry of Energy and Resources will continue to prioritize public and environmental safety in its approach to overseeing responsible resource development.”
