A teen faces charges after a Melfort resident called police about an attempted break-in.

Melfort RCMP were called early Monday morning after a resident caught two youths trying to break into parked vehicles in a residential area on the east side of the city.

Officers found one of the suspects and arrested them, recovering some stolen property and other items that are suspected of being stolen.

The 16-year-old Melfort male has been charged with theft under $5000, possession of stolen property, mischief under $5000, break and enter, and five counts of failure to comply with conditions.

The suspect appeared in court on Tuesday morning, and the court ordered his detention.

He will appear in court Sept. 15.

“The Melfort RCMP would like to thank residents for reporting these incidents right away so that police could respond and locate the people responsible,” the news release stated.
