More interest shown in second Coffee with Council event in Melfort

A much better turnout for the second Coffee with Council event at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort Tuesday night.

A small group of people attended the first meeting in May, but Councillor Tara Muntain told northeastNOW that despite the turnout, those that attended were able to get questions answered by members of council in attendance.

Tuesday night’s meeting saw many more people take part, with over 20 people showing up to the come-and-go informal discussion.

“What a great turnout,” Muntain said. “Definitely a lot more people here…than we [had] in the last [event], and I think that each one we have is a little bit more.”

Muntain said the informal setting is an excellent opportunity for anyone that has questions for members of council, wants to air concerns, or is just looking for a chance to meet Mayor Glenn George or the rest of council.

“We had one lady that just wanted to meet everybody to see who is representing them,” Muntain explained. “It’s fantastic. You see a name on paper but to be able to sit, shake their hand and say hello, that’s priceless.”

Muntain said several youths were also there Tuesday night looking to learn more about how council worked, while one youth asked how she could make a presentation to council. Being able to provide the information on how to bring a delegation to a council meeting to make a presentation was another way Coffee with Council helps residents, according to Muntain.

She said it’s all about council being transparent and willing to talk, and to listen.

Another Coffee with Council is expected to be planned for sometime after Christmas, likely in January. However, Muntain said all of council is available to answer questions or listen to concerns, and their contact information is available on the City of Melfort’s website.
