Mustangs split preseason pair with rival Hawks

The Melfort Mustangs have completed their opening pair of preseason games this year.

Melfort split with their rival Nipawin Hawks, as both teams won at home.

The Mustangs won in their rink on Monday in comeback fashion by a score of 4-3, before falling on the road Tuesday, 5-0.

“I think we have to work on our play a bit, but overall, the first two games were pretty solid for having not really played with each other. You just want to make a presence out there, make yourself useful, and just give it your all,” said young forward Lincoln Rogers, who played in both contests.

“There was definitely a little less space, and the play was a little faster as both teams were a little older the second time around, but it’s just something that you have to adapt to. Overall, if you just play your hardest, you’ll do pretty well.”

For Rogers in particular, playing his hardest led to fighting his hardest on Monday night, as he got in a scrap.

“It kind of all happened pretty quickly there, but, yeah, I guess that would have made a little bit of a presence there,” he added.

The Stangs will now practice for a couple of days before concluding their exhibition schedule this weekend with a home-and-home set against the Humboldt Broncos.

The Blue and Green will travel to Humboldt on Friday, before returning to the Northern Lights Palace on Saturday, as they look to finalize their roster for the start of the regular season.

“Again, I think making the team is just about giving it your all out there and showing them who you are. We’re definitely gonna have to touch up on some systems, though, to get ready to play Humboldt,” Rogers concluded.
