No reopening date for Wadin Bay Campground

There is no reopening date for the Wadin Bay Campground after it sustained severe damage from the Pisew fire in June.

That’s according to Lac La Ronge Provincial Park Manager Natasha Merriman, who explained the electrical and water systems were lost, as well as several structures and maintenance equipment. The playground and service centre, however, were unaffected.

“The boat launch and beach area were not impacted, though, and have been open all summer,” she said.

“Currently, we don’t have a date for reopening Waden Bay Campground just because of the damage that was suffered there. We have done some hazard tree removal just to make it safe, but other than that, we don’t have a date to reopen.”

Work also continues on the trail system within the park as much of it was affected by the wildfire as well. The trail at Nemeiben Lake has been reopened and work continues at the Don Allen Trails to remove hazardous and burnt trees. Plans are also in the works to replace structures that were lost there.

“Nut Point Trail did suffer damage to the first half of the trail. We’re currently working with local community groups and contractors to complete hazard tree removal and clean up to have that trail operational for next season,” Merriman remarked.

“Saskaloppet Trail has been severely impacted, several structures were lost by Parks and the La Ronge Ski Club. Hazard tree removal has not yet been completed on that trail, but we’re working on that as well.”

With the September long weekend now over, the only remaining campgrounds in the park to remain open are the Missinipe and Devil Lake Campgrounds. Merriman said while she didn’t have any specific data about campground attendance, she added staff have noticed a reduction in stays due to wildfires and smoky conditions.

“We do still have staff working and they are completing fall work projects right now, which includes some of the fire clean up and shutdown of our structures and that sort of thing,” she remarked.

“I’d just like to thank my staff for the great job they have done getting back to work after the evacuation and during the fires, and everything they have done to get the campgrounds operational for folks to be able to camp this summer.”
