New median should improve safety of city’s highest collision intersection

New concrete medians at 22nd Street and 1st Ave. West in Prince Albert were put in place because of the volume of collisions there, according to the Public Works department.

A traffic safety review of multiple intersections showed that this particular location had the highest crash rate in the whole city, with 63 collisions between 2013 and 2022.

“Safety is always our top priority when making traffic control decisions,” said Evan Hastings, Capital Projects Manager for the City of Prince Albert. “This intersection has consistently shown a high number of collisions, with 78 per cent being particularly dangerous right-angle (T-Bone) collisions.”

Of the 63 collisions, there were 22 injuries and about $800,000 in damages.

Lack of visibility was identified as a key cause of the collisions. Drivers on 22nd Street heading north and south faced skewed sightlines.

The city said the angle of the intersection makes it difficult for drivers to see oncoming traffic, and when vehicles turn side by side, visibility becomes even worse.

With the changes, traffic is funnelled to a single lane, which helps sightlines and ‘reduces conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians’, reads the city’s news release.

There is now a stop sign in the middle of the roadway as well.

“This project is about ensuring drivers have the visibility they need to make safe choices,” Hastings added. “With SGI’s support, we can target high-risk intersections like this one and reduce the chances of collisions, injuries, and claims.”

Improvements were completed by the city, but paid for by SGI.
