It has been a big week for the Melfort Food Bank.

The organization was the recipient of the quarterly 100 Women Who Care donation at a meeting on Monday.

The Food Bank was selected to receive the $10,000 donation after they, Chateau Providence in St. Brieux, and Melfort Communities in Bloom, all made presentations at a Melfort Golf and Country Club event.

Melfort Food Bank Secretary Ellen Zuck told northeastNOW that being named the recipient was a pleasant surprise.

“We were overjoyed, every happy emotion you could possibly have, we had,” Zuck said. “We were very thankful that they chose us.”

The money will make a huge difference to the organization, but Zuck said making the presentation and providing information on what the Melfort Food Bank does for the community is also incredibly valuable.

“Lots of people don’t know what we do here, so this was 100 more people that we were able to inform what we do at the food bank.”

Zuck said many people are shocked when they learn how many people use the food bank on a regular or even an occasional basis, and the clientele they serve. Many have jobs and merely have difficulty making ends meet due to rising costs.

“It could be your neighbour that comes here, there is no specific type of person that comes here,” Zuck said.

The money will be put to good use. Zuck said the food bank’s finances have been a struggle for some time, and this donation will help pay bills and purchase things like milk and eggs. She said they often buy $300 worth of those items at any given time to help their clients.

“We’ve been struggling with finances to keep open, to pay our bills, things like that,” Zuck said.

The food rescue program helps for many items, but certain items still need to be purchased by the food bank.

The organization also put the fun in fundraiser last weekend, as the food bank hosted an inflatable costume race. Many local organizations and businesses took part, and Zuck said a large crowd was on hand to watch the races and enjoy a barbecue at Melfort’s Spruce Haven Park. Sixteen racers ran the heats in inflatable costumes, and the team from Thomas Motors won the race.

Zuck said the races were incredibly fun to watch and the food bank plans to hold another inflatable costume race next year to build on this year’s success.
