Raiders finish preseason with big win over Pats

With five games already in the books, the Prince Albert Raiders welcomed the Regina Pats to the Art Hauser Centre for the final preseason matchup of the year. The Raiders took the lead early, the Pats managed to tie it, but the Raiders kept up the pressure and they managed to pull away with seven different goal scorers and a 7-3 win.

The Raiders got two powerplays to start the game, but at the 12:06 mark they managed to find the back of the net. Jackson Kostiuk sent the puck ahead up the right wall for Connor Howe, and he dropped the puck back for Oli Chenier. He then cut to the middle, using the defenders as a screen to fire the puck over the glove of Kelton Pyne for the game’s first goal.

Then at 18:57, the Raiders added another on a similar play. Ben Harvey sent the puck up the right wall for Kostiuk, he dropped it back for Howe, and he cut to the middle before firing a wrist shot right off the elbow of the post to give the Raiders a two goal lead.

After 1: Raiders 2 – 0 Pats, shots 13-7 Raiders

The Pats managed to get on the board quickly in the second with Liam Pue trying to get a shot on goal, but he was denied into the corner. Matt Paranych found the rebound in the corner, curled off the wall and into the slot, then fired a shot to score at 2:35.

At the 4:03 mark, the Pats scored again when Keets Fawcett got ahold of the puck and dragged it around the outside, using his speed to get around a defender and put the puck fivehole to tie the game.

The Raiders would fire back though at the 7:36 mark when Kostiuk again started the play, sending the pass across the ice to Chenier streaking to the goal. The Pats goaltender stretched out expecting a shot, but instead Chenier sent a pass into the middle for Harrison Lodewyk to put the puck into the back of the net.

Then at 12:22, the Raiders got the game winner thanks to a classic play. Owen Corkish and Aiden Oiring both got assists on the play, but Brayden Dube was the star when he took the puck around the right side of the ice, beating a defender to tuck the puck in between the goalie’s pad and stick.

After 2: Raiders 4 – 2 Pats, shots 16-12 Pats, 25-23 Raiders overall

The Raiders started to run away with things in the third period when Ty Meunier worked the puck out of the corner to Daxon Rudolph in the middle of the blueline, and Rudolph sent it to the left for a waiting Jonah Sivertson to blast home on a onetimer at 3:06.

Then after Aiden Oiring tried to put the puck in on a wraparound, Pats goaltender Pyne threw his stick as he tried to get across for the save, and as a result Oiring got a penalty shot at 4:15. With the open look at the net, Oiring walked down the right wall, then cut back to the middle, stickhandled, then ripped in a shot from in close to score.

At the 12:31 mark, the Raiders added their final goal on the powerplay with a great passing play. Riley Boychuk from the right side of the blueline sent the puck below the goal line for Connor Howe, and he one-touch passed the puck out front for Ben Harvey before he fired his onetimer into the net.

The Pats added one more goal at the end of the period when the puck was shot on goal and Dimitri Fortin made the save, but the clearing attempt came right to a streaking Connor Bear who fired a great shot over the shoulder at 13:00.

FINAL: Raiders 7 – 3 Pats, shots 9-6 Raiders, 34-29 Raiders overall

The Raiders will open up their preseason against the Saskatoon Blades on Friday, September 19 with their home opener. During that game, they’ll also raise the banner Raiders earned when they won last year’s East Division.
