Timberjaks mark beginning of new season with camp and first preseason game

A new year has dawned on the Prairie Junior Hockey League (PJHL) as preseason gets underway across the province.

Here at home, the Prince Albert Timberjaks hosted a Fall Camp along with last minute tryouts this weekend ahead of their first game of the year, a preseason matchup with the Saskatoon Quakers on Sunday.

The clubs head coach and general manager Stef Corfmat said this year’s squad is shaping up nicely.

“I think our back end will be a lot better, our goaltending will be a lot better. Our front end, I think we’re going to be deeper.”

This season’s roster is looking to be almost the same as last year, only they might be missing one of their key players come puck drop.

The 2024-25 PJHL Most Valuable Player and Timberjaks leading scorer Keethan Isbister may be absent from the roster this season after heading to B.C. to attend training camp with the Creston Valley Thunder Cats of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL). So far in four preseason contests, Isbister has collected five goals and five assists, highlighted by a five-point performance on Sept. 10 against the Nelson Leafs.

Additionally, forward Hudson Thiessen may also not be returning to the team after signing a letter of intent with the Dryden Ice Dogs of the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) in the offseason.

Although it’s sad to see players move on, Corfmat said that’s also the goal.

“If we can develop kids and help them move up, we’d love to do that. And if they don’t move on, well, they can have a pretty good career with us.”

He added that one player from last season, Brody Anderson, was seeing some playing time with the La Ronge Ice Wolves in the Sask. Junior Hockey League (SJHL) last season and although unsure if he was playing in Jr. A this year, Corfmat confirmed that the 2024-25 PJHL Rookie of the Year is back in P.A. and will suit up for the Timberjaks this season.

“He’d rather play here.”

Following camp and tryouts on Friday and Saturday, Corfmat said he and the coaching staff will need to whittle down the group that they have before they head to Saskatoon on Sunday.

“We’ll definitely release some guys before then. We’re only probably going to keep three goalies, maybe eight [defencemen] and 15 forwards, and then work from there.”

Puck drop for their first preseason game is at 5 p.m. at Rod Hamm Arena in Saskatoon.

Before the snow falls, the team is hosting an event for the community off the ice in the form of a great night out.

Alongside Lake Country Co-op, the Jaks are inviting people to come out for their Drive-In movie night on Sept. 20 at their home arena, the Northern Regional Rec Centre in Buckland, where they will be showing the 1985 family/adventure film The Goonies, followed by a more recent project in the 2025 blockbuster F1, featuring Brad Pitt.
