Belanger says federal government to work on economy for all during fall session

As the House of Commons resumes for the fall session, Saskatchewan Liberal MP Buckley Belanger says the federal government will be busy building a strong economy for all Canadians during the next several weeks.

“[Prime Minister Mark Carney] does preface that aspiration of creating a really highly integrated, highly efficient economy where all the provinces and territories are part of a massive effort to strengthen our country overall,” Belanger said.

“The other point that he makes is becoming our own best customer. Obviously, in this tariff riddled world that we live in, it’s important we utilize each other’s strengths. An example I would use is the lumber in B.C., the canola in Saskatchewan, the oil and gas in Western Canada, certainly the mining activity in Northern Saskatchewan. All these assets that Canada owns; the resource-based companies we are seeing investing in Canada. He wants to make sure, the Prime Minister does that we streamline, and we create a highly efficient economy where transportation issues are being addressed, labour shortage is being addressed, that we are open for capital investment.”

Last week, the federal government announced a series of fast-tracked nation-building projects that will be given streamlined regulatory assessment and approvals with assistance in structure financing, in close partnership with provinces, territories, Indigenous Peoples, and private investors.

Those projects include a facility in British Columbia that will double Canada’s production of liquefied natural gas, a project in Ontario to be the first G7 country to have an operational small modular reactor, the expansion of the Port of Montréal’s capacity by approximately 60 per cent, a copper mine expansion in British Columbia, and finally supporting the McIlvenna Bay Foran Copper Mine near Creighton.

Working in close collaboration with the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, the Foran project is meant to supply copper and zinc to strengthen Canada’s position as a global supplier of critical minerals for clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and modern infrastructure. It’s expected to create 400 jobs, boost local economies in Saskatchewan and Quebec, where the copper will be smelted, and is expected to be the first net-zero copper project in Canada.

“There are certain initiatives that [Prime Minister Mark Carney] will be unveiling to ensure we all do our part to build that economy and these nation building projects are part and partial of the effort to do that,” Belanger explained.

“Obviously from the federal government’s perspective, the federal government gets certain things done, but they also want to be open to investment. A lot of Canadians and companies want to invest in that Canadian economy.”

Belanger noted there will be continued work on delivering high-speed internet and cellular service upgrades, as well as a push to prepare for the wildfire season next spring. He also added there are specific projects in the works on housing, highways, health care and rebuilding the North, which should be announced in the coming weeks.
